5 MJ energy impact test on a slender reinforced soil embankment

Résumé

Rockfall hazard in mountainous areas is mitigated using different types of protective structures. Reinforced soil bunds are often preferred over other types of protections due to their excellent shock absorbing ability and their lower maintenance requirements. In this study, a slender soil bund reinforced with Terre Armée technology and vertical faces was built and subjected to a horizontal impact with an energy of 5 MJ. Two systems of reinforcements were installed in the bund, one for the static stability of the bund and the other for distributing the effect of the impact in the longitudinal direction. The bund successfully stopped the impacting block and proved to be an efficient rockfall protection for the considered test conditions. The rapid cameras showed that besides the local damage due to the block penetration, the structure was flexible, which is due to the mobilization of the reinforcements even outside the impact position.
