Centralité de la marge : utilisation politique de la périphérie dans trois poèmes narratifs de Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Résumé

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a literary and artistic movement founded in 1848, built itself as an alternative to the pictorial codes of the Royal Academy and to the moral norms of Victorian society – or even as the incarnation of a cultural marginality. These artists express in works that are sometimes reactionary, but more often revolutionary, an intention to morally reform Victorian modernity. This subversive intention varies in intensity and clarity, and can often be read in marginal motifs, whether this margin is material or figurative, pictorial, literary, or symbolical. This article will strive to show the importance of peripheries in three poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as a place where essential life and humanity are revealed in contrast to a cold, cruel, or absurd center. “Eden Bower” renews the myth of the Garden of Eden by taking the point of view of Lilith, the half-demon from the Talmud; “The White Ship”, a poetic adaptation of the White Ship shipwreck in which William, son of Henry 1st of England, died, is told by Berold the butcher; and finally “The Blessed Damozel” shows a pseudo-Beatrice waiting for her lover on the ramparts of heaven, in a way that reverts Dante’s quest. In these three poems, a classical story, often associated to elite culture, is reinvented through a displacement of the usual narrative center, which gives a new angle of approach to the story. Through this narratological process, what used to be the center is now subverted, and its faults are highlighted. This way of telling or presenting the classical narrative canon has a double political goal: to give back to minorities the voice that is usually taken away from them, and to represent the essential humanity that forms the basis of a political alternative to Victorian modernity.
